Alternating Between the Neurotic, Psychotic
and Perverse in Complex Clinical Cases
Stefano Bolognini, M.D.
Saturday, May 9, 2009
Registration and Coffee: 8:15 AM to 9:00 AM.
Program from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
(Lunch included)
Stefano Bolognini, M.D. is known internationally for his creative reworking and integrating of diverse clinical concepts and techniques that can be applied to a given case. He sensitively teases out subtle but important distinctions, such as between erotized, erotic, loving, and affectionate transference, or between empathy vs. empathism and he shows how we can make use of these refinements in our clinical work. In this program he addresses the complexity of the contemporary patient, for whom simplifying diagnostic formulas do not easily apply. He shows that primitive defensive organizations co-exist with neurotic ones and demonstrates that there is great utility in paying close attention to neurotic mechanisms even in cases where deep disturbances in sexual identity or borderline states predominate.
In the afternoon Dr. Bolognini will comment on a clinical case in which pervasive erotic fantasies, shame, histrionics and omnipotence co-exist within both dissociated and repressed states.
Stefano Bolognini, M.D. is President of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society and the Psychoanalytic Institute of Bologna. A distinguished and gifted public speaker, he has published 120 articles on psychoanalytic topics in Italian and foreign journals, as well as in edited books. His writings span diverse subjects and have rich vitality and clinical relevance: empathy and the uncsonscious, erotic transference, the analyst’s emotions as obstacle and asset, “the kind hearted” versus the good analyst, and therapeutic action are among the many topics he has considered.
