Attachment Theory and Technique: March of the Penguins and Beyond

Instructor: Janet G. Woznica, Ph.D.

                   Member, LAISPS

Early attachments have a profound effect on the nature and quality of our relationships throughout life. Secure attachments in early childhood tend to foster healthy relationships in adulthood, while insecure attachments, trauma, and loss hinder the development of healthy relationships and may lead to emotional disorders. This course will integrate attachment theory, object relations, and self psychology in exploring the development of early attachments and their effect on subsequent relationships, affect regulation, and identity development, as well as clinical implications for effective treatment. Case material will be utilized to illustrate the clinical application of theoretical concepts.

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will gain an understanding of the role of early attachments on subsequent development based on attachment theory, object relations, and self psychology.
  • Participants will develop techniques for fostering the therapeutic relationship as a secure base to promote the development of a healthy sense of identity and connectedness.
  • Participants will learn the clinical implications of attachment theory for psychotherapy.
