The Psychological Impact of War: Consequences for the Soldier, the Family, and the Community

Dr. Broder will discuss the psychological impact and emotional sequelae of deployment, combat stress, and homecoming on soldiers and their families. Issues such as predeployment anxiety, family disruption, loss, PTSD, and issues of shame of seeking treatment among military persons will be highlighted. Recovery and the impact of this work on the treating therapist will also be discussed.
Dr. Broder is the founder and Clinical Director of The Soldiers Project. Together with a team of psychotherapists, she initiated this project as a response to the often devastating psychological consequences of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This program offers pro bono psychotherapy to servicemen and women and their families.
Course Objectives:
- Participants will recognize and understand the early signs of distress in soldiers and military families.
- Participants will learn about the treatment process, therapist vulnerability to traumatic overload, and need for support for the therapist.
- Participants will learn how to develop programs to reach out to families experiencing the disruptive effects of the cycle of predeployment, deployment, homecoming, and redeployment.
