Law & Ethics: The Application and Negotiation of Rules in a Psychoanalytic Setting
Instructor:
A psychoanalytically trained psychologist and lawyer, Dr. Stephen Phillips, will discuss current laws, regulations and ethical constraints imposed on mental health professionals. These externally imposed rules often pose significant difficulties for therapists working within a psychoanalytic frame. A substantial portion of the program will be devoted to an update of current ethical and legal requirements and a review of some of the more important rules of which psychoanalytic psychotherapists often run afoul. Clinical vignettes and case examples illustrating commonly encountered legal and ethical concerns will be provided. Ample time will be reserved for questions and comments as well as concerns from participants’ own practices.
Course Objectives:
- To review key legal and ethical requirements of practice and update participants on recent changes in legal and ethical requirements of practice.
- To highlight legal and ethical requirements of which professionals often run afoul.
- To utilize clinical material to demonstrate the appropriate application of legal and ethical constraints.
- To provide participants with insights into the application of legal and ethical constraints in a psychoanalytically informed practice.
