Trauma Studies Series

The Ernest S. Lawrence Trauma Center is a community outreach program that provides service to those affected by trauma in diverse communities. The project involves providing psychological services for "at risk" populations, sharing psychoanalytic thinking, and applying it to issues facing the community.

This year, in conjunction with the LAISPS Extension Program, the Center is presenting a three part series on Trauma Studies. The complexity of the concept of trauma runs the gamut, with each struck population absorbing specific and often long term impact on the psyche, the soma, and the heart of victims and their families.

Each course will address resilience and recovery, constitutional and environmental factors that help to ameliorate the impact of trauma, and therapeutic approaches that foster healing.

The first workshop, "Trauma Overview: Theoretical Constructs and Therapeutics — Where Do We Stand, What Have We Learned, How Can We Help?" will focus on trauma from a developmental perspective, issues of attachment disruption, child abuse, neurobiology, and therapeutic approaches.

The second workshop, "The Impact of Violence on the Minds of Children and Adolescents," will focus on the work of Martha Bragin, L.C.S.W., Ph.D., who for the past 20 years has consulted with governments and international and nongovernmental organizations to design, monitor, and evaluate programs for children affected by community violence and war. Her work on the impact of violence on the mind of a child exposed to violent events is profound.

Dr. Judith T. Broder, M.D., Clinical Director of The Soldiers Project, a program under the Ernest S. Lawrence Trauma Center, will lead the third workshop, "The Psychological Impact of War: Consequences for the Soldier, The Family, and The Community." Dr. Broder will bring her knowledge and experience regarding the psychological impact on soldiers and their families to her discussion of therapeutic approaches that ameliorate the impact of trauma and foster healing. With the current war raging, the impact and ripples on the individual, the family and the community are mental health issues for all clinicians.

While we encourage participants to attend all three of these workshops, enrollment is also open for each workshop as an individual course.
