Addressing the Impact of Violence on the Minds of Children and Adolescents

This course will address the sequelae of exposure to extreme violence in children and adolescents from a psychoanalytic point of view. The controversy over PTSD, clinical issues in regard to symbol formation, and key elements of treatment will be explored. The question of resilience, its definition, how it can be enhanced and embedded in the clinical material, and issues of moving from theory to technique will be addressed. All material will be presented in a multicultural context. Case illustrations, literature reviews, bibliography, and handouts will be provided.

 

Course Objectives:

  • Participants will learn methods of understanding the effects of exposure to extreme violence on children and adolescents from a psychoanalytic perspective.
  • Participants will learn key elements of clinical treatment with children and adolescents affected by extreme violence.
  • Participants will become familiar with protective factor research and conflict transformation in order to enhance their capacity to build resilience through clinical treatment.
