A Morning with Winnicott

With Pam Dirham, Ph.D.

Get ready to rethink how you see the earliest days of human life and their powerful effect on who we become. Winnicott was a pediatrician before he was a psychoanalyst, and his work with thousands of children and their mothers directly informed his theories. Moving away from some of the more abstract, drive-based concepts of classical Freudian theory, Winnicott instead focused on the crucial, tangible environment that a baby grows up in, and its implications for psychotherapeutic treatment. We'll explore how his ideas about “good-enough mothering,” play, creativity, and the "transitional object" have helped us understand how we move from a state of total dependence to becoming our own unique, authentic selves. His legacy continues to influence not just psychology, but also education, social work, and even the arts.
