Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma: Unconscious Legacies
Led by Janet Woznica, Ph.D.
The effects of traumatic experiences are often transmitted unconsciously from parent to child and from generation to generation. This class will address psychodynamic processes underlying the intergenerational transmission of individual, systemic, cultural, and historical trauma. The nature of post-traumatic stress, the manner in which it is often transmitted from parent to child and reverberating effects on subsequent generations will be explored. The transgenerational impact of mass traumas and historical oppression will also be explored. Effective treatment based on attachment theory, object relations, self psychology, and sociocultural perspectives will be addressed. Case material will illustrate the clinical application of theoretical concepts.
Dr. Janet Woznica
About the Presenter
Dr. Janet Woznica is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in private practice in West L.A. She is a member and faculty member of LAISPS, where she co-created and co-directed the Trauma Studies Program. She has also been an adjunct faculty member at Antioch University and Pepperdine University.
Dr. Woznica has published articles and given dynamic presentations on intergenerational trauma, high-conflict divorce, family estrangement, and adolescent suicidality at conferences nationwide. She has worked extensively with intergenerational trauma in survivors of abuse and incest, domestic violence, historical trauma, and families of Holocaust survivors, and has in-depth experience working with high-conflict divorce, family conflict and estrangement.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
Identify psychodynamic processes underlying the intergenerational transmission of trauma.
Describe the nature of post-traumatic stress and its effects on parent-child dynamics.
Formulate effective treatment based on object relations, attachment theory, and sociocultural perspectives.

Psychologists can earn a maximum of 2 CE credits for this program. Partial credit may not be awarded, based on APA guidelines.

Refunds/Cancellations: Refunds, less a $10 administrative fee, will be made if cancellation notification is phoned or postmarked three (3) business days in advance of this program. There will be no refunds on requests received after the refund deadline. Full refunds are made in the event that LAISPS must cancel this program.
